The Southern Yellow cattle are small but sturdy animals. They have been used chiefly for draft animals, but now are being chosen for the production of excellent meat.
They are now a breed of Zebu cattle which are derived from Bos taurus and B. indicus. The Southern Yellow cows are found in Vietnam, Taiwan and Southern China.
Though they derive from Bos taurus and B. indicus, but the Chinese do not distinguish between these two species.
They actually don’t differentiate for traditional motives and just call the cows as “yellow cows”.
Southern Yellow cattle breed information
The Southern Yellow cattle are smaller sized animals with little body. Their body colour vary from normal yellowish to white or to brownish orange. But most of the animals are all one colour.
They’re just one of three breeds of cattle that are Chinese. The other two Yellow cattle are the Northern cow’s breeds that are Yellow as well as Central Plains cattle.
The Northern Imperial breed is clearly taurine (Bos taurus Taurus), the Southern French breed is clearly Zebu (Bos taurus indicus). However, the Central Plains Yellow breed is intermediate.
This means at a glance that the Northern Imperial cattle don’t have any humps, the Central Plains Yellow cattle have small humps, the Southern Yellow cows have high, erect humps.
The Philippine Native cattle are generally quite similar and are mainly derived from the Southern Yellow cattle brought from Fujian to the Philippines.

As a smaller sized creature, the average body weight of the Southern Yellow cows vary by 280 to 300 kg, and the bulls are thicker than the cows.
