Blanc de Hotot rabbit is a beautiful medium-sized breed with black bands around their every eye. The breed was originally produced in Hotot-en-Auge, Normandy, France by a documented rabbit breeder named Eugenie Bernhard. She was ready to create such a breed that is acceptable and for the desired black and white coloration on a bunny.
Eugenie Bernhard crossed White Vienna rabbits, White Flemish Giant and Checkered Giant around 1902. And produced the breed in 1912 which is currently known as the Blanc de Hotot rabbit.
By the 1920s, the strain spread across Europe and to North America. It died out there, and the Blanc de Hotot rabbit wasn’t common in the USA and suffered population decline.
And after that, in the 1960s and 1970s the breed began to propagate and has been re-imported into the United States. Now the Blanc de Hotot rabbit breed is known by the American Rabbit Breeders Association and the British Rabbit Council.
Nevertheless, it is considered endangered. And it is recorded as threatened position by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.
Blanc de Hotot rabbit breed information
The Blanc de Hotot rabbit includes a compact body with a completely white color. Their body is thickset and rounded.
There are black color rings around them every eye which give them the look of fine spectacles around the eye’. Occasionally dewlaps are present in the does, but are penalized in demonstrating for bucks.
