Gute sheep a primitive breed that is primarily raised for meat. A landrace-based breed which is from the island of Gotland, Sweden. The Gotland sheep is the direct descendant of Gute. Related to the North European Short Tailed Breeds like Finnsheep, Romanov, Spelsau, Shetland, Faroe, Orkney, and Icelandic sheep.
Gute sheep breed information
Gute breed is medium-sized with grey in color.
Both the rams and ewes are horned. They are curved and deeply ringed. Ram horns are large and ewes horns are thinner.
The horn length of ram is 60 cm and the ewe is 35 cm.
Gute wool is long, fine wool which is coarse and wavy.
The mature Gute ram weighs 80 kg and ewe weighs 50 kg.
The height of mature ram is 64 to 84 cm at withers and ewe is 65 to 71 cm.
The wool is wavy and coarse. A mixture of fine long wool and kemp fibers.
Gute sheep shed the fleece partly or entirely in the early summer.
Gute sheep live up to 12 years.
Lambing percentage is 170 to 180 %

Things to know
The name Gute sheep in Swedish is Gutefår which is formed with two Swedish words (G) = Gotland and (ute) = outdoor. Since the native Gotland sheep were kept outdoors most of the year.
The Gutnish name for the breed is honnlamb or hornlamb, meaning horned lamb or sheep.
