Even the Krishna Valley cattle are a breed that is large compared to some Indian cattle breeds. They have a gigantic framework with a body that is profound and constructed.
The Colour of the body is grey-white using a color on fore and hindquarters. Along with the cows that are mature are more whitish in appearance than the bulls.
Occasionally brown and white, black and mottled and white animals are also frequently seen. Bulging forehead and body are the primary characteristics of the breed.
Both bulls and cows usually have little curved horns which usually emerge in an outward direction from the angles of the curve and this poll up and inwards.
The neck of the Krishna Valley cows is short and thick. As well as their dewlap is pendulous and well-developed. The sheath of these animals is also pendulous.
They have pointed and small ears. The barrel is big and well-developed although their body is short. Legs of the animals look powerful and are thick and short, however, the hooves are thought to be soft.

Krishna Valley cattle are a dual-purpose breed of cattle. They’re used for both milk production and agricultural performance purposes. The bulls are famous for their strength and endurance.
Even the Krishna Valley cows are active, powerful and extremely hardy animals. They are a heavy draft breed which are appropriate for work purposes in the black cotton soil area.
Agricultural jobs within this field become tough to work during the season. The breed is also used for hauling heavy loads. The cows are milkers, and also their capacity is variable.
Average milk production of these cows is about 900 kg per lactation.
The strain has been known to have originated in the regions emptied by the Ghataprabha Krishna and Malaprabha rivers of the Bagalkot, Bijapur, and Belgaum districts.
They were very important to breed of cows, but their significance lost due to limited usage of draught power and selection of farmers for milk.
National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources came to the rescue of also a project and this germplasm to conserve the breed has been initiated in November plan through BAIF Development Research Foundation under Network job on AnGR.
Main breeding tract of this breed includes Belgaum, Bijapur and Raichur districts of Karnataka state. And Solapur Satara and Sangli districts of Maharashtra state.
It’s thought that the Ongole cattle breed of Andhra Gir Pradesh and Kankrej breeds of Gujarat and local cows breed with Mysore type blood inside them have led to the Krishna Valley cattle breed’s source.
