Montbéliarde cattle are a breed of dairy cows that are utilized primarily for milk production and especially for cheesemaking. It’s kind France’s Montbéliard region.
The ancestors of these breeds were Bernoise cattle, but now the creatures are their own breed.
Montbéliarde cattle breed information
The Montbéliarde cows are moderate to large-sized animals of dairy type.
They are quite similar to the red and white Holstein cattle. They are reddish pied from coloration with whiteheads and short horns.
Both bulls and cows usually have horns, and their horns are all of lyre-shaped.
Older cows stand around 135-140 cm tall at the withers and about 148 cm for those bulls.
The typical dwell bodyweight of the bulls ranges from 900 to 1200 kg. And typical bodyweight of the cows varies in 600 to 700 kg.
Montbéliarde cattle benefits
Montbéliarde cows are mainly employed as a milk cattle breed in France.
Their milk is used particularly for cheesemaking. But the breed can also be good for meat production.
Their beef is of very good quality, and they’ve got better beef characteristics compared to Holstein cattle.
The Montbéliarde cows are very sturdy and, ideal for harsh environments and easily controlled animals.
They can ingest massive amounts of rough forage and are not influenced by heat. The cows are fairly good milk producers, even though they aren’t as striking in milking because the Holstein Friesians.
On average, the cows can produce about 7486 liters of milk per lactation. Their milk contain about 3.45 percentage of protein and about 3.9 per cent butterfat content which are fantastic for cheesemaking.
The Montbéliarde cows are also great for producing quality beef. The cull cows to create good quality carcasses without the surplus fat.
The calves grow comparatively quickly as compared to the other cattle breeds. The animals are extremely wealthy and long resided.
Strong udders of the cows mean they have high resistance to mastitis. This is an attractive trait for farmers who would like to continue to keep their herd healthy and productive.
Now the breed has spread to a lot of nations and has become popular for crossing with Holsteins to offer improved longevity and fertility.
Joseph Graber first employed the title Montbéliarde, when demonstrating a set of cows in the Langres agricultural competition in 1872.
Before this, the local stock from native multipurpose cattle breeds such as Fémeline and Tourache (later known as Comtoise) had been enhanced by Mennonite farmers from Switzerland and called Franco-Swiss. These cows were called the Alsatian breed before about the mid-1800s.
A herdbook for its Montbéliarde cattle breed was founded in 1889, and then the breed was formally accepted.
The breed was chosen for great roughage conversion since 1980. And lots of animals were sold into the Midi region and Algeria after 1900.
Red Holstein cattle breed was crossed to the strain from the 1970s, and at exactly the same time they crossed with Fleckvieh bulls. But the cross with Fleckvieh bulls was not too profitable.
The Montbéliarde cows were also employed for crossing to the Danish Red and also Vorderwalder cattle breeds from the 1990s. Crossbreeding of Montbéliarde and Holstein has become very well known in the United States recently.
