Murray Grey cattle breed

The Murray Grey cattle are a breed of beef cows in Australia. It was developed from the Murray River shore around New South Wales.

The breed was developed in a first opportunity breeding of a black Aberdeen Angus bull and a Shorthorn cow during the Federation drought.

Murray Grey cattle are of medium to large dimensions, possess sound construction and have good walking capability.

Their hair color ranges from mild silver to dark or chocolate gray. The majority of them are silver into a silvery-dun colour although some animals can be black.

There is dark pigmentation on their skin which helps them to avoid eye cancer, photosensitivity reactions, and sunburned udders. These cows are naturally and don’t have any horns.

The bulls on average weight between 800 and 1100 kg. And bodyweight of these cows varies from 500 to 700 kg.

Murray Grey cattle are mainly a beef cattle breed. They’re used primarily for beef production. For crossbreeding in many nations, but they’re also employed.

History

From such matings the consequent thirteen dun-grey calves were considered curiosities. And then Peter and Ena Sutherland swallowed these on the Thologolong property along the Murray River in New South Wales.

Murray Grey cows grew faster and were great converters of feed and produced quality carcases. These are the reasons this animals become quite popular.

And farmers became curious soon in those animals and started breeding them. The large scale commercial farms were established in the 1940s.

Now the strain is available in a number of countries. Both reside Murray Grey cattle and embryos have been exported to a Lot of countries such as the United Kingdom, South America, New Zealand, Canada and United States.

The official Murray Grey Cattle Society was made from the 1960s.
