Tiroler Steinschaf sheep are a dual-purpose breed, that is known for meat and wool. The Tiroler Steinschaf is also called as Pecora della Roccia Tirolese. The name suggests “Tyrolean rock sheep” or ” Tirolean Stonesheep“.
The Tirolean Stonesheep is among the oldest present sheep species in the whole world. Its origin lies in the Neolithic sheep, a primitive race. The Sheep has been bred for wool, milk, and their meat on mountain farms for centuries at Tirol.
It’s increased in the countries of Tyrol and Salzburg in Austria. It is the sheep strain that is Tyrolean and moves from the early 19th century. Tiroler Steinschaf
Tiroler Steinschaf sheep breed information
An extremely strong breed of sheep that’s well adapted from the alpine mountains to the states. Founded in alpine pastures, occasionally higher than 2,500m above sea level
The wool color is black, grey or white.
Their wool was in the 20th century to create loden fabric, particularly in high demand. The Tirolean Stonesheep is a species, today. The estimated population is around 4,000 hens and 14,000 global.
Whereas the wool grows around 30cm, the undercoat is quite dense and crinkled with fiber spans of up to 15cm. Due to its beautiful mottled look, it’s used for costumes and conventional dresses and felt shoes.

The male weighs around 90 kg and the female is 70 kg.
The first lambing is at 18 months. Lamb weighs around 2 to 2.5 kg
Resistance and adaptability for low-rainfall areas and extreme locations.
High fertility with high vitality and fitness.
Shearing is two times a year.
The herdbook was created in 1973. The registered population noted for Austria in 2012 has been 2780 into 3500, and total numbers are estimated at 12,000.
In 2013 no complete number for the strain was listed at the herdbook.
The milder sheep wools there is simply such little demand the breeds themselves have become endangered, their numbers dropping into the thousands such as Tiroler Steinschaf.
The Associazione Nazionale Della Pastorizia has kept the genealogical handbook for Tiroler Steinschaf sheep, it’s one of the forty-two autochthonous local sheep breeds.
