The Chianina cattle are a breed of beef cows originates in the area of the Valdichiana. The breed requires the middle Tiber valley and its name from its original place.
It was a draught cattle breed previously, but today elevated chiefly for beef production. It is one of the cattle breeds on earth and the biggest.
Chianina cattle breed information
Chianina cattle are among the largest cattle breeds on earth. They are also the lightest and tallest breed of cows. Their coat is usually white with very minor grey shading also on the foreparts and around the eyes.
Both bulls and cows are horned and have mucosa, points and dark pigmented skin. Tips of their horns, hooves, change, muzzle , organic openings and their skin are all black. Their horns curved ahead, are very short and are black in colour in the younger animals but eventually become lighter.
The most noticeable physical qualities of the Chianina cows is their broad and well-defined muscling. They have shaped back shoulders and back quarters. They have more legs than most other cattle breeds.
Their encounter is long and right. Compared to their body size, udders of the cows are little and they’re not known for milk production.
The normal height of the Chianina bulls is about 160 to 170 cm and occasionally more. And the height of the cows is around 155 to 165 cm).
The bulls on weight together with a few bulls, between 1500 and 1200 kg are heavier. And typical bodyweight of the cows is 800 kg to 1000 kg.
Chianina cattle benefits
The Chianina cattle are a dual purpose breed. They are raised for both meat and also for purposes. They produce enough milk to their calf, although the cows aren’t great for milk production.
The Chianina cows are an exceedingly hardy breed and they’re well-adapted to almost all climates, particularly do well in warmer climates. They’re also able to do well in the regions with comparatively sparse pasture.
They can walk more distance during drought and other demanding seasons seeking food and forage, chiefly due to their long legs and demanding hooves. The Chianina cattle are known to have temperament and they’re comparatively easy to manage.
The strain can be known for their simple calving. Though they were very popular because of draught animal in years past but now the strain is employed primarily for beef production.
The Chianina cows are preferred for meat production mainly because of their tolerance of sunlight and heat, high yield of higher excellent meat and their high growth rate. They are excellent foragers and also have greater resistance to insects and diseases .
The breed has good percentage, around 64 to 65 percent. The breed is also widely employed for cross-breeding. For reducing the fat content of meat, it has been cross-bred with Language strains in the USA. The cows are not great milk producers, but they make milk for their own calf.
It’s been increased in the Italian regions of Tuscany for an extended time, also at Umbria and Lazio.
The breed can be known by a few other titles such as Chianina del Valdarno, Chianina Della Valdichiana, Calvana along with Perugina. The renowned bistecca alla Fiorentina is generated from Chianina cattle’s beef.
Before the mechanization in agriculture and their mezzadria system’s collapse, the Chianina oxen were the primary supply of agriculture electricity within their location. They are used in processions such as the Palio di Siena’s Corteo Storico.
