What are Maine Anjou cattle used for?

The Maine-Anjou cattle is a dual purpose and big breed of cattle coming from the Anjou area in West France. They’re also known as Maine-Anjou and Rouge des Prés in French.

It was used as a draught animal previously, although the strain is increased for milk and meat production.

Viscount Olivier in Chenillé-Changé created the Maine-Anjou cattle breed in 1908. Currently, the strain is used for meat production.

Maine-Anjou cattle are a large breed of cows and they are primarily red and white in colour (sometimes black or roan).

They have white patches in the tail, head, underside and back legs.

They can be either horned or polled.

The Maine-Anjou cattle were designed as a dual-purpose breed. But they are now used as a beef cattle breed. They have been employed as draught animals in the past.

History

The cattle in the northwestern part of France were large and well-muscled animals at the beginning of the 19th century.

These cows were called the Mancelle breed and they have been for easy fattening popular. Along with Mancelle breed was grown from by the Maine-Anjou cattle breed.

The Maine-Anjou were imported reside through artificial insemination to Canada, into the USA in 1969. The official Society of Maine-Anjou Cattle Breeders was created in 1908.
